Physical & Chemical Properties:-

Melting point: 190 °C (374 °F; 463 K), 173 °C (cis and trans isomers) & Acidity (pKa): 2.80, 4.46 (trans isomer). Boiling point: 542 to 543. °C & Solubility: Soluble in water and alcohol; 1gm dissolves in 5.5 mL water.

Used as a plasticizer for buna rubber and plastics and to make itaconic acid Used as a flavor, antioxidant, and in the preparation of plasticizers and wetting agent.
